Pediatric dentistry is an area of specialized dentistry that mainly deals with the dental needs of kids. In this field, pediatric dentists are involved in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental problems in children below the age of 18. The scope of work of pediatric dentists is quite vast. They treat young patients for routine dental care, checkups, fluoride treatments, orthodontics and much more. With advanced training and research facilities, pediatric dentists can even be expected to perform surgery.
There are a number of Pediatric Dentistry clinics and hospitals located in different parts of the world. Pediatric dentists follow a specific protocol for treatment. They provide a range of services such as routine dental checkups, teeth fillings and fluoride treatments. To ensure that the teeth of the young patients are in good condition, pediatric dentists use a variety of dental implant thornton co care techniques such as fluoride application, sedation, laser polishing and preparation, fillings, extractions and root canal therapy. While these techniques are followed rigorously in the pediatric setting, a little bit of indulgence on the part of the dentist is permitted as far as the cosmetic aspect is concerned.
As far as the education and training of the pediatric dentists is concerned, it is quite different from the regular dentists. It requires additional training for them, which is obtained from post-graduate programs at the graduate level or from a period of study associated with a dental school. Specialized pediatric dentistry schools also offer specialized training to its students. Most of these schools also incorporate a part of the degree course in rehabilitation of the patients. here, the students are given an overview of the current practice in the field of pediatric dentistry, with special emphasis on oral health and oral hygiene.
After completing a specialized course in pediatric dentistry, the student has to undergo a specific set of examinations and interviews before being eligible to join a dental school. Usually, this is followed by a residency program in a prominent dental college which is usually some years long. During the residency program, the student is taught the theoretical as well as the clinical aspects of the subject.
The second year of practice in a clinic is called the intern year. In this stage, the student is taught about the various techniques of pediatric dentistry, like the extraction of wisdom teeth, placement of wisdom teeth and the formation of the permanent tooth structure. After this, the student is trained in the professional conduct of the dentist and learns how to deal properly with patients. This is accompanied by a careful study of the statutes of professional responsible for the regulation of the practice in the particular state.
The third year is often referred to as the postbaccalaureate year. In this stage, the dentist learns about advanced aspects of pediatric dentistry, such as orthodontics, implant placement, periodontics, jaw disorders etc. The fourth year and on is known as the master's or PhD program. This is the most challenging one and requires at least two years for completion. It takes around four to six months for the pediatric dentists to get their license from this institute.
